I'm considering trimming my flist. I'd like to know who's reading. Not answering does not mean you will necessarily be dropped; asking to stay means you will not be included in this purge; asking to be dropped...well, I'd hope no one does, but I will if you want me to. Asking to be added increases your chances, but is ultimately my call; if I add anyone, it will probably be after I've dropped some.

[Poll #514256]

(For the record, I deliberately chose check boxes rather than radio buttons, so you can, for example, mark both "Please keep me" and "Do what you will".)

Edit, 7/6/05: I have completed my first round of deletions, and am just barely under 500. I will probably wait a bit and maybe delete a few more before adding anyone, in order to stay under 500. (Why 500? info page flist display gets wonky over 500, which is the main thing motivating this in the first place.) if, for some reason, you respond to this poll after this point, please comment; I will not be watching the results anymore.

I have pondered how you have the time to read your friends list...but it has been a good resource for reading other people's blogs. Thanks

It's split into 5 groups; the lower priority ones only get read a few times a week, rather than daily. I generally manage to keep up.

You're free to move me to a lower list if you'd like. I mean, it's not like I don't talk to you all the time in real life anyhow.

Actually, I'm more interested in weeding out the lower passes, but I don't want to drop anyone who's actually interested/reading. I move people between filters as needed, and rarely tell anyone their pass level, since I do read them all. But I'm not dropping you, certainly :)

Actually, anyone can rather easily tell who is using a filter to read your entries, and tell which filter. I'm on second pass. One person reads mine through a filter called "Humans." and some have some rather humorous or intrsting names for their filters that I'm on. :-) I've never created such filters. I just go through everyone's entries on my list and read the ones that I'm interested in. Since I never know whose posts will be interesting or who I'm going to be interacting with, I'd rather not filter anyone. On weekends when there's not much activity on LJ, I welcome seeing any posting activity! You have over 3 times the friends than I do and you're a member of a LOT of communities, so that greatly increased the volume of posts you go through.

You're interesting because we might not have any friends in common, and I can tell we met on the long_hair_guys group.

Referrer log, I presume? I suspect most folks on my list don't actually care. I don't use my reading filters to exclude anyone, just for time management -- everyone I've friended is on one of the passes, and they all get read eventually. (Occasionally, after a longish trip with limited access, I can't get to the oldest posts on the lower filters by the time I get there; that's the only exception. I do, however, skim; how could I not?)

I freinded you after seeing your pics on [livejournal.com profile] long_hair_guys because your profile sounded interesting, and implied you didn't object to being added by random strangers...I can always use more Southern geekboys to read. (Although I'm in CA now, I grew up moving about the South.)

Yeah, I'll friend anyone who friends me, and like interacting with people. And filters don't bother me -- I'd actually rather people use filters and keep friends on their list rather than unfriending. The finding out about the filters was something I found out by accident about 3 or 4 weeks ago. Referrer logs, like you say. I was helping a friend with a photo hosting site and I posted some images using his server instead of my own, and he generated statistics from the logs, and I saw a list of every referring URL to the image. Whne someone uses a filter, the URL will have the filter name tacked onto the end. In the final version of his site, he'll probably trim that off. He parses the logs and simplifies an LJ referring URL to the name of the LJ user. In the case a filter is being used, the URL doesn't fit the pattern and gets displayed unparsed.

Yeah, the filter-in-URL is how I access them, generally -- I've customized my layout to link to each group rather than to my generic "friends" page.

I do read your journal, but it's always seemed to me the height of arrogance to offer an opinion on how someone else runs their blog or prioritizes their reading. "Do as you will" goes without saying.

I mostly want to see who actually is reading and interested, especially among the people I don't have a lot of direct interaction with.

Ah. . .see, I'm always startled by the concept of not reading someone on my friendslist (the same way I'm startled that other people -don't- check livejournal every fifteen minutes. Err.). My friendslist would be better called a "reading list," and I forget other people don't define it the same way.

I do read everyone on my list -- all 550+ of y'all. But it's a bit much sometimes, and there are folks who've never commented and who I've never commented on, and if we also don't interact much off LJ...I occasionally wonder which are actually interested. Eventually, I'll look at those who've not responded and decide which are sufficiently interesting that I'm keeping them regardless and which I may drop. (I mean, if they weren't at all interesting, chances are I wouldn't have added them to begin with. I may not drop anyone, in the end. But I can at least rule out folks who want to be kept this way, which narrows my decisions-space.)

I found you through Kelly's ([livejournal.com profile] empire74) LJ...

I knew you were cool when your username is the same Pern character that mine is (just that mine is purposely mis-spelled from my IRC days due to chatroom rules) ;-)

That said - I hope you'll keep me on your flist!

We don't know each other at all. I read your posts when I see them, but we never respond to each other. You don't take up much space in my list, and I don't post that often. I shall not be offended if you remove me from your widget list. It's all good; we do what we need.

Oh yea. I totally forgot about the hot DEVO injection. But, that was during your stay at HellBBS. On a side note, DEVO are playing at Bumbershoot in Seattle this September.

I'm just saying I won't be offended if you dropped me off your widgets list.

I hope you will keep me on your list. Unfortunately, I can't get the Poll to offer me click buttons - probably still the problem that my computer won't accept livejournal cookies and let me log in. *sigh* So, I have this really great, lifetime account that gives me less access and privileges than the average free account. *grumble* *grumble* *grumble*

*sigh* again.

You're going to trim your _what_? Oh.

I have Mozilla set to "Accept images that come from the originating server only," and I'm sure some people have "Use image placeholders on your friends page" checked in their LJ Personal Information. I suspect "anyone can rather easily tell" isn't quite accurate.

On the other hand, we're talking about my flist here, a group drawn primarily from tech-savvy circles -- if anyone wanted to know their level, most of them could find out pretty easily, either through technical means, or by asking -- I'd probably not refuse a direct inquiry, although, for most people, I'd have to check. I just don't go around advertising it, because I see little to no potential for good in that. Also, it's subject to change on a whim.

you are on my list, and you were never in danger of being dropped, even if you hadn't responded. I'd kind of like to get my list back under 500, so my info page displays accurately again, but I won't do it by sacrificing interesting/interested folks. I may drop some of my quieter communities, because I wouldn't be missing much; i may drop some folks who don't read me and who rarely post anything I want to comment on; I may decide not to drop anyone.
