The inside of my head is mostly non-verbal. My thoughts are not in words. Sometimes, it takes a few tries to translate the thought in my head to words outside my head accurately. If I seem to be shifting what I'm saying, it's usually not that the thought has changed, but that I'm refining my expression of an idea that hasn't changed. (Communication by successive approximations!) Also, I'm not so hot with social grease at times; if I seem combative or overly aggressive, I probably don't mean to be; I'm just not conveying tone well. I say this not as an excuse, but as a warning/heads up -- please ask me what I intend, tell me how you perceived it, and give me a chance to apologize and clarify miscommunications.
