So I left Baycon this afternoon, made pretty good time, and by Santa Barbara, my GPS-predicted arrival time was 11PM or a bit later. Then traffic slowed to a crawl, with neither an end nor a cause in sight, and I started with the "avoid roadblock" feature on my GPS. This has worked well for me in the past, and did the first time I used it today. Unfortunately, it's far more effective in urban and semi-urban areas, where there really are routing options, and I ran out of cities without realizing it. So the second try -- when I reconnected to my original route the first time, the traffic still wasn't moving, and there was still no end or cause in sight -- my second try resulted in an adventure: SR 150 to Santa Ana Rd to 33 back to 101. SR 150 is a two lane twisty mountain road. And it was getting dark. And my fuel light came on when I was 5-6 miles into the detour. However, it does come on fairly early, and I was able to get to Ventura and a gas station before I'd even lost another bar on the gauge. A bit scary, though, as I didn't know how long the detour was going to end up being. I'm not sure whether I actually lost any more time taking that route than I would have sitting in the traffic. Between that and a multi-car accident blocking two lanes on the 405 just north of the junction with 10, my projected arrival slipped to 12:30 or so. By the time I got through Orange County, it was late enough that I was fading, so I pulled off the road to nap a couple of times (at a view point and at a park and ride), and so I got home around 2. Having unloaded that which I need tonight and that which I'm unwilling to leave in the car overnight, and taken care of various time-sensitive communications (including this one), it is now time to fall over go snore.
There's a decent chance I'm not going to be able to catch up on LJ and FB, so if anything important or interesting happened, let me know.
Baycon was great, though! I'd say "more on that later", but realistically, I doubt I'll get around to writing much of anything up. Too much else to do.
