So I have this big backlog of books to read. I got all the unread ones shelved last night, though I need to (re)shelve some read ones still. I'd finished the novel I was reading at bedtime (as opposed to the one I keep in my car for meals and other time killing, or the half-read non-fiction I'm working on, when I'm in the mood for non-fiction). Working through the shelves in order doesn't appeal to me, but nothing was leaping out saying "read me next! me me me!" So I grabbed the tile bag from my travel scrabble set and started drawing. First tile: A. That narrowed it down to 6 or 7 books (by author's last name). Drew a few more tiles, but none matched the second letter of the available authors (U, E, A -- I don't read Auel, no unread Aesop). Finally, an R. Armstrong matched, so I read Sounder, which I managed to never read as a kid. A good story, though I certainly saw the end coming. Also a very quick read.
For my second selection, I used the My Word cards rather than the Scrabble tiles. First draw: SH. Shea, Sheckley, and Shelley. After a few non-matching cards, I finally drew and L, so I'm now reading Frankenstein.
