Things are a little better where I am, sort of. The air quality is really, really bad. I went into work this morning, but by lunch I was coughing and starting the feel tight in the chest, so I went home, to see if it was any better. To my surprise, it was -- I expected my air conditioned office to be better. The office, however, is about 5 miles north of home, so a little closer to the current activity, plus not very far from the I5 fire.

Yes, I5 fire. A little one, compared to the East County/backcountry fires that are still active. Someone was driving with a pipe or muffler or something dragging, creating sparks, which set some roadside brush on fire. That got put out, but it was active around the time I left work.

Some of the maps were still showing fires close to me, near 805 and 52, but those were isolated and may be out now, judging by some of the maps I'm seeing now.

I wish there was a newsradio station not filled with ultraconservative conspiracy theorists.

A lot of the rural areas, places I'd never even heard of, are being evacuated now, but the areas where people I know live seem to be OK. A few have been evacuated; most of those are back home now. I haven't heard of anyone I know losing a home, though probably someone at work or church has.

My biggest concern now is the air quality. I have a mask to wear when I go out, but it's bad out there. I'm not seeing a lot of ash falling today, but the light's been orange most of the day, you can smell the smoke in the air, and you know there's got to be all sorts of fumes from the burned houses and cars and such. No idea how long it will take to get breathable air again.

Glad you're oaky. Your recent lack of posts, coupled with the current exothermic condition of your part of the state, was a topic of discussion yesterday.

I guess I did forget to update here yesterday; oops -- I've been in touch with people via IM and Usenet and email, though. If you look at the map here (http://www.fadedshadow.com/images/Firestorm2003-2.jpg), I"m near the North Clairemont dot. The fire came closest Sunday afternoon/evening, and hasn't been especially near since then. At this point, even if the winds shifted this way, the fire probably wouldn't get here, because there's so much in between that has already burned.

Finally got back into SD late Monday evening. Could see some of the fires on the descent, that was creepy. (Wanted to see more. That’s probably creepier, yes?)

The air down here in Ocean Beach was a bit nasty last night, but is basically fine this evening. Either that, or I’ve become acclimated to some base level of crud in the atmosphere. Rancho Bernardo, on the other hand, looked (and smelled) like Hell on Earth.

If nothing else, feel free to flee down here to O.B. if the air up there is still evil.

You almost certainly have better lungs than I do, too -- I have pretty bad allergies, with asthma-like reactions to some things. We'll see how work goes today.

if the air gets to bad you should come up here, but yeah take care of yourself, and i am glad you are ok
