I wanted to get a head start on the packing. But the move is far enough out that I can only pack things I can live without for a couple of months. Also, I don't have a staging area, so I need things that take up less space when packed. So, I started with the library, excluding the unread books. Now, it's basically done. Since I'm not rushing yet, I've got time to label things well. For the entertainment of those who are entertained by such things, here's a breakdown:

Anthologies

  1. A-G
  2. G-P
  3. P-Y (Also some fiction, A)
  4. Journeys[1] (Also some fiction, A)

Fiction:

  1. A-B
  2. B
  3. B
  4. B-C
  5. C
  6. C-D
  7. D-E
  8. F-G
  9. G-H
  10. H-K
  11. K-L
  12. L-M
  13. McCaffrey
  14. M
  15. M
  16. M-P
  17. P
  18. Q-R
  19. S
  20. S-T
  21. T-W
  22. W-Z

Nonfiction

  1. Languages and Languages
  2. Language, Religion
  3. Religion, Ethics, Career, Poetry
  4. Plays, Essays, General Humor, Sociology, Psychology

  10. Fiber Arts

Other

  1. Picture Books A-S
  2. Picture Books S-W, Oversize A-F
  3. Oversize

Can you guess some of my past and present favorite authors from the distribution? Some I like very much aren't prolific enough to make much impact, but some are. The one single-author box is something of a give-away.

[1] The Journeys through Bookland series, which I wanted to keep together, being somewhat numerous (12 or 15, I think) and large-ish but of uniform size. But they didn't actually fill the box.

In point of fact I am entertained by such things. That makes me either nutz or an indexer. Happily, I'm an indexer :D :D :D

I still have the Journeys Through Bookland set my Grandmother used when she was teaching school almost 100 years ago.

The two are not necessarily exclusive, you know... =:o}

I got this set from an older woman my family knew...I'd have to check the dates on them to see how old they are, and, well, they're packed. :)

I do have one or two schoolbooks which were my great-great-aunt's though. I'm not sure if she used them as a student or as a teacher; if it was as a student, they're probably 80-90 years old.

You are so delightfully Book-Geek :) (kisses your nose)
If you ever want to change professions, come work at my work, they'd love you :]

Ah, but would they love me enough to pay me the equivalent of what I make now or better?
*grin*

As long as you've got time to label things...

You might consider actually writing the names of the authors contained within, on the outside of the box. So if you're looking for Bova you can tell if he's in A-B, or one of the B boxes...

Or, type them up, and tape one copy to the outside of the box, print an extra copy to go inside the box, and post it all here on your LJ or somewhere else online where you can find it again.

(Or would that move you into the nucking futz category?)

It would go into the "more time and effort that I find worthwhile" category. If I have any non-anthology Bova, it's probably in the second B box. *grin* (In other words, the boxes are alphabetical, and I've got a pretty good sense of where anything I might be looking for falls. I'm not likely to want to access anything durectly from the boxes; it's mostly for ease of unpacking.)

It's great that you are getting a head start on your packing. We really need to do that, too. I was thinking the books would be a good place to start. But first we have to get some boxes. It's so hard to get focused on it, but it needs to be done.
