What is up with RDU rental car prices for the second weekend in October?

I'm going to my 10 year reunion, and was hoping to rent something so I"d have some independent trasportation, but even the cheap econoboxen are $40-$70/DAY. I'm particularly annoyed by this because I saw a much lower rate via Hotwire a couple of weeks ago, but didn't book it because I was still debating whether or not to rent a car.

I'm certianly not a fan of College Football -- but I lived in NC for a while, including a stint in Chapel Hill. UNC v. State is a holy war. Not as bad as Duke vs. UNC, but close.

Yeah, I'm familiar with the level of rivalry, having lived in NC for ~13 years, but hadn't realized the game was that weekend.

I recommend trying "rent-a-wreck". The cars are usually nice, but nowhere near new, which drives the price down a lot.
