Firstly, I would like all of you to read this beautiful poem by [livejournal.com profile] cadhla.

Secondly, on the way to work this morning, I realized that driving without caffeine was not a good plan today, so I stopped at the local CyberBrew, as they're on the right side of the street and have had $1 specials lately, to get more people in. Today's special was a latte, which wasn't all that appealing, so I opted for a small Firewall -- two shots of espresso + brewed coffee. If that's drinkable black, you know the place has good coffee. Also, lots of caffeine bang for the buck. It's quite drinkable, so CyberBrew, or at least the Santee location, has the Nolly Seal of Approval.

However. You may have noticed the odd name of the beverage. Indeed, the drinks do have something of a geeky/'net theme in the naming. And so, I started thinking: what drinks would be named for what languages if one were to do a code-themed coffeshop?

Here's what [livejournal.com profile] samuraimeg and I have so far:

Perl: build your own (coffee, with or without flavor shots, espresso shots, etc., hot or iced -- TMTOWTDI!)
Python -- white mocha
C -- black coffee
C++ -- latte
Java -- mocha
Assembly -- espresso
Pascal -- decaf
VB -- hot chocolate
JavaScript -- tea
C# -- iced coffee
VB.NET -- mexican hot chocolate
ASP.NET -- cappucino (all foam, no backbone)
FORTRAN -- coffee beans
COBOL -- Americano
Ada -- peppermint latte

ewwww.
all my drinks of choice are Java something and VB!
ick.
*giggles geekishly* sorry, not a fan of Java/JS and i spent too many years coding in VB...

I'm not either, which is not to say I dislike tea or cocoa. My thinking there was about strength/power -- hot chocoate is candylike but not very strong, just like VB, for instance.

TIOSSNDOTW candylike OWIWPU.

Shto?
(I'm getting about 2/3 of the acronym, I think, but not quite parsing. Of course, the rest will probably occur to me as soon as I hit Post, because Murphy is like that.)

BASIC -- instant coffee powder
assembly -- unwashed coffee beans still in the original bags
ADA (alternate) -- coffee powder packet in the ration MRE

I went with assembly == espresso on the "strong but rough" grounds -- espresso is strong, but is often pretty bitter.

Hmmm, I'd argue that assembly is the coffee beans.

A couple others:

SmallTalk -- granita
PHP -- Italian soda

Actually, I'm going to say PHP is a frappucino-type drink -- it pretty powerful these days, but still candylike and not as strong as a Real Language.

Haskell: Organic rooibos ginger tea.
Smalltalk: Chai latte.

Uh. I'm running out of drink ideas faster than I'm running out of languages I'd want to see on the menu. :/

So comment with the languages and perhaps through the power of the internet we'll come up with something?

Actually, Lisp was defined elsewhere (in the time between when I opened the comment window and psoted). :) Miranda should be something very close to Haskell, so if Haskell is organic rooibos ginger tea, perhaps Miranda could be organic rooibos orange tea. Or even just organic rooibos tea, as I think it preceded Haskell.

I wouldn't mind seeing ProLog. Also, NQC and AppleScript would be plusses. I'll ponder which others...

AppleScript would be apple cider, of course :)

I don't know ProLog or NQC

NQC stands for "Not Quite C". It's a special-purpose C-like language for programming the Lego Mindstorms robotic bricks. It's essentially for adult geeks who bought the Mindstorms set and want something more serious to code in than the graphical toolset they provide for kids.

ProLog stands for "Programming in Logic." It's a language in which you express things in a formal logic including premises, logical relationships and queries. It's primarily used in AI. There's a decent introduction here.

Hmm...maybe NQC would be chicory coffee...

(Note: Haskell choice selected primarily to match my favourite drink with my favourite language. :) )

(I also see that Smalltalk's been heavily overridden.)

I'm supprized that Fortran rates with Coffee Beans, as it is rarely used except by us scientist working on the older generation programs. (i.e. the work I'm doing with Dr. Weber and the programs for radio recievers we played with in F77 class.)

Because it's very strong but not necessarily palatable. Which is why I said coffee beans :)
