This is an excellent article on fundamentalism, Christianity, and politics. Conservative Christian may be put off by the author's Universalist leanings towards the end of the article, but I think his eariler points stand regardless -- specifically, the truth of what he says about the differences between fundamentalist Christianity and the teachings of Jesus. I recommend reading this article if you are an American, a Christian, a fundamentalist, or someone who must interact with any of the above.

Wow! That guy is one heck of a writer! He had a great deal to say and said it all very well. The one turn of phrase that I'm stuck with for now, however, is the difference between "evangelical" and "avengelical." Just looking at the words, I see angel vs. avenge. For me, that says a whole lot right there.

Thanks for sharing.

Thank you!

Excellent article. Particularly liked his take on how the term Christian gets stretched beyond recognition - used to represent a package of political positions and presented almost like a manufactured product, it loses actual religious meaning. Sometime it feels as though Christianity is becoming a brand. The evangelist is just one more pitchman, rather than the sharer of good news. Makes this crackpot Universalist miss the days when she could always get a good "faith vs. works" conversation going with a fundamentalist. Now many just want to talk about Republicans vs. Democrats (sigh).
