They've had it for hearing for awhile now, I figured it would only be a matter of time before vision came along... Much higher bandwidth and a bunch more issues with vision, though. Cool :)
As mentioned above, this does sound a bit like the cochlear implant devices they have for those who are deaf or nearly so. It's simply been a matter of time until the same technology could be adapted for sight. It's great to see, and when I saw the picture with the article, the first thought I had was of Geordi's visor. :D
Yes, I'm reasonably familiar with CIs -- one of my former SOs got one during the time we were involved. Unlike those, this has a direct brain interface, which stikes me as incedibly cool. (My first thought was "Borg!")
Or how about if the "glasses" were streamlined a bit, wouldn't it look like Geordi La Forge's visor from ST:TNG (Note: What the pictures at the included link don't seem to show is the blinking red "connection" points that were on either temple for Geordi to interface with the visor. ...These were shown in an early episode where he was explaining that he couldn't see without the visor.)
Wow, cool. I remember reading about what must have been the early research in this area --- probably in the 70s (but I read about it much later than that). It's cool that it's gotten to the point that it can be applied.
Combine that with the artificial lab-grown organs I read about recently, and soon we'll have entire artificial people!
