Friday was all about panels. I did pick up a few things in the dealers room, I think; maybe the ones I'm thinking of were Saturday. Anyway Actionopolis was selling their books for $5, and I"d been curious about them, so I gradded Zombie Monkey Monster Jamboree and What I Did on My Hypergalactic Interstellar Summer Vacation.

Terry Moore talked a fair bit about the ending of SiP, gratitude to fans, etc. I only took notes on the "what's next" part.
Next: writing for Spiderman Loves Mary Jane and Runaways for the next year. Not doing the art for them. After a year, he plans to go back to his own project(s). Talked about Motorgirl and about combining Kixie the Pixie and Lizzie the goth girl.

Neil started out by talking about ComicCons past, including the fan who handed him a Tori Amos tape, which was the beginning of their friendship.
Pimped Neverwear, told "Scary trousers" story.
Got some FAQs out of the way:
Good Omens? needs funding.
[I'm dropping to raw notes here, because I don't quite recall what was said. maybe someone else can fill in?]
Sandman 20th?
Dream Hunters
Coraline graphic novel
Dream Hunters comic: Craig
Absolute Sandman
[end raw notes]
Miracle Man: still a legal can of worms
Audience questions, but Neil talked about other topics between questions, too:
Death: movie happening slowly
Interworld: Dreamworks
Guillermo del Toro: Neil compared to Dumbo's magic feather, GdT said he was too big -- he's Nei;'s magic Dumbo!
Maddy blogging during con
Animated version of the Endless Storybook? Accost DC.

[raw notes again; I have no idea what this meant]
"Orange"?
The Starry Rift Johnathan Struhn (Strahn? can't even read my own writing)
[end notes]

American Gods movie?
No one has figured out how to adapt it; it was written after writing too many screen plays, so the structure is deliberately un-movie-like. Probably someday.

Good Omens bake sales or other form of collective funding suggested. Neil not saure Gilliam could argue with that many producers and still make the movie.

Thoughts on Harry Potter?
Gets misquoted a lot, so won't say much.

Graphic novels as re-examination of existing stories -- why?
Different reasons for different stories

Inspiration process?
Works on two things at once so he can do something else when stuck.
"Play good music. Drink cups of tea. This is good."

What makes a good story and storyteller?
Penn & Teller magic. Good storytellers make you forget the man behind the curtain.

What has Neil read that influenced him as a writer, and what would he recommend?
No silver bullets. He's always been a voractious reader.

What story or other thing made him want to write?
C.S. Lewis
Swamp Thing
Alan Moore
Gene Wolfe
Samuel Delaney
Roger Zelazny
Ursula LeGuin
Diana Wynne Jones
Jonathan Carroll
[order I wrote them down, not order he named them]

Why a comic (Sandman) vs. a book with pictures (Stardust)?
The format of Stardust was Vess's idea -- no next panel. Turned out "next painting" was just as bad.

Graveyard book?
Five of eight chapters done

Do characters reflect real people or are the pure imagination?
Mostly imagined; even those inspired by real people change in the writing and become unrecognizable.

I went to the Penguin books panel, which was mostly announcements about forthcoming books. They gave away a number of ARCs, but I didn't get any. Might type up the full list later, but here's the ones that most interested me, that I didn't already know about (so I'm not listing the upcaming Charlaine Harris books, for instance):
Jan. 2008, Joe Haldeman, The Accidental Time Machine
Sept. 2007, Robin McKinley, Dragonhaven

And that's Friday. More to come for Staurday.

Nope, I was never there at the right time, I guess. Well, I could've gotten one of the samplers, but I don't like samplers; I want full text or nothing. I got no ARCs at all this con. Of course, it's not like I'm short on reading material, and one of the things I need to do this afternoon is attempt to actually write a review of the ARC I got through LibraryThing's Early Reviewer program, so it's no great tragedy.
