a thought I want to record somewhere:
what I liked best about Murder in the Solid State is the number of non-slimy lawyers. While there are slimy people who take legal action and thus probably have slimy lawyers, the two lawyers who are actual characters are both pretty cool. It's nice to see an author going against that particular stereotype in a quiet way.

Saw it Monday night.
I hated it.
<lj-cut text="Why?" Anakin's mushy monologues made me want to walk out. Awkward young romance can be done well: Peter Parker in Spiderman "When I look into your eyes, I feel abnormal". This reminded me of the lamest poem a boyfriend ever wrote me. Amidala apparently owns no practical clothes whatsoever, except possibly that white one at the end, which almost qualifies. And when you're trying not to start something with a lust-obsessed 19-year-old (who seems immature even for 19), don't run around in a sparkly black corset! The Yoda-Dooku battle was OK, but I'd rather watch CTHD over than try to get the good bits out of this movie. And who came up with the name Dooku. anyway? It's just begging to be parodied into Dookie. Too many obligatory video game scenes -- the factory, the asteroid belt, the first chase scene, just to name a few. Ultimately, I'm glad someone else bought my ticket.

Also from Monday, I talked to my brother for the first time in months. It's not that we haven't been speaking -- we've exchanged some email and snail mail. It's just expensive to call France, and they didn't have a phone for ages. They finally got one a few weeks ago, but due to the whole not working thing. I really couldn't afford to call. But MCI just gave me a $50 phone card for switching to their service, which gives me$0.20/minute to France. So I called him after the movie last night, after checking the time difference online. It was Tuesday morning there, and we talked for 10 or 15 minutes before he had to go finish getting ready to start his day, and I needed to head for bed soon. That was amusing. He says the future is pretty much like the past.
