I received the news yesterday here in New Haven and I am of course heartsick. Stuart and I had known each other for 30 years, since we first met in Berkeley, CA at 16 and had managed to keep in touch over the years. He was a brother, if not by blood then definitely in spirit. He had many moments together, from various episodes of teenage "misspent youth" through to my divorce 3 years ago.

I miss him so very much.

We weren't close friends, but it was very unexpected; he didn't seem old enough for a fatal heart attack. I mean, one knows intellectually that there's not really an age limit, but that's not the same as expecting it.

He'd actually had -- and survived -- a previous heart attack six years earlier. At that time he confided to me that his grandfather had also died of a heart attack, at 39.

Of course I read him the riot act about having been a smoker since he was 14 -- and to his credit, he quit and changed his diet. I think we all assumed he was out of the woods after that.

I hadn't known about the previous heart attack or the smoking; he quit before I met him. (I think I met him while working G'con when it was here, but I'm not entirely sure. Probably sometime around then, anyway.)
