Went rollerblading tonight with a few people from church. Much fun. It had been a long time since I'd been blading with anyone, though I've gone alone now and again.
When I first moved here, we'd go blading almost every Sunday, usually in the afternoon, sometimes in the evening, occasionally both. But over time, as some people moved away and others came in, we quit going. Soccer, and then ultimate took over as the Sunday afternoon activities. Neither of which are activities I find very enjoyable, so I wasn't hanging out with the group as much. I mentioned to one of our summer interns how much I missed the blading, and discovered she'd just gotten new blades, and so we planned to go blading sometime, eventually narrowed down to today. She, I, and a couple of the guys went to Mission Bay, and skated for an hour or so, probably on the order of 6 miles, then grabbed pizza for dinner. A good time was had by all -- I hope we can make this a regular thing.
I've loved being on wheels since I was a kid, learning to skate on my best friend's big sister's skates, in their garage. We'd skate around in circles, seeing who could spell Mississippi fastest -- "M-I-crooked letter-crooked letter-I-crooked letter-crooked letter-I-humpback-humpback-I". Or on the patio behind my house, or at the skating rink, for a birthday party or just for fun. There's a sense of freedom I get from skating. I get it on a bicycle, too, sometimes, but skates are my favorite.
