Sep. 23rd, 2002 11:17 pmDue to my expert use of the "throw things in a box to deal with later" technique, the cleaning and rearranging portion of the evening went fairly quickly. Next, I moved on to the "assemble Ikea furniture" portion. Minor annoyance when I discovered both battery packs for my drill were dead, but the screws were hand-installable, it was just a bit harder. Then the big snag: two of the screws were wrong. Off to Ikea to exchange them. Problem: instead of writing down the part number from the instruction sheet, the girl eyeballed it. So both pairs of potentially correct screws she gave me were too short. But by the time I got back home and discovered this, Ikea was closed. So was Home Depot. Both of the Home Depots vaguely nearby. (I asked at the first about the second.) Home again. "Hey, isn't Lowe's open past 9?" Check the web. Yep, til 10. It's ~9:20 at this point, and I'm low on gas. Quick run by the gas station, and I'm at Lowe's (which is in the same shopping center as Ikea) by 9:45. Stare in bewilderment at the vast array of screws and bolts, and completely overlook the bright yellow thing with all the "what size screw do you have?" sockets. Get help from an employee, and depart with a pair of screws which turn out to be exactly right. Yay Lowe's! Back home, finish the assembly of desk and chair, and move FrankenMac onto desk. Hook things up, dig up a surge protector, and start installing OSX. Which is running now, and I should check on soon to see if it needs more input yet.
