nollyToday I spent Way Too Much money.
However, my truck no longer makes funny noises, and I should not see smoke coming from the steering column[1] anymore. Most of it is on the 6 month same as cash Goodyear card, the rest is on the card that I'm keeping paid off.
It was almost at 50K, so I got the usual maintenance done in addition to the problems fixed.
Oil change
Tire rotation
Oil filter
alignment
brake caliper replacement (front) -- the noise was because the right front caliper had seized. the rotors were OK, at least.
clean/adjust rear brakes
brake fluid
replace idler belt and pulley -- "it was all over the place" said mechanic
replace turn signal/washer assembly
new battery -- "it was fuming"

samurai_meg and I went to the Build a Bear Workshop. Much fun. It's easy for the price to add up fast, though. I'm pleased with my creations; I'll post pics later.
On the way home from the bar place, I realized it was the first time in ages I"d been near home depot more than 10 minutes before they closed. SO I got the weedblock and paving stones to pave over my yard. Pics of that later, too; I need to go back for some smaller stones to fill in the edges, but I'm tired now.
[1] It wasn't happening regularly, just once or twice, in circumstances indicative of a short involving the wipers and the turn signals. The mechanic said that, judging by the quantity of the part in stock, this is a common occurrence.
