That book upset me horribly when I was little. Even though everything worked out in the end, I felt so sorry for Grover up until that point that I could hardly stand it. (I had this sort of problem with a number of children's books, actually.) But it was something of a favorite anyway--I was sort of nuts about all things Grover, though perhaps less because of their relationship to the TV character and more because of their relationship to my beloved stuffed Grover.
*boggle* If you didn't want Grover to be put through the stress of getting closer to the monster, then why did you turn the pages? I think you have to acknowledge your role as an accomplice of the monster.
I do have this nagging thought that part of the impetus for the awful awful Grover and *lm* book is some child psychologist's Ph.D. thesis on how Grover is begging children to not read.
