Spoke to the home warranty company again, and now I'm all confused -- apparently, they still don't actually know what the problem is, and if it's a foreign object -- and no one can think of another explanation -- they won't cover, but if it is something else going on, they will, and the guy from yesterday hasn't turned in his final report yet...meh. I'm going to see if anyone at church tonight can recommend a plumber (or is one!) and probably just deal with this on my own, unless the warranty comes though with something quickly.

It's odd that they'd have to replace the toilet for a clog. The only place a clog could happen that'd require that is in the short portion of pipe within the toilet itself, between the bowl and where the toilet base mates to the drain-pipe. The only thing I could imagine causing a clog there that wouldn't respond to plunging is a hard object (comb or the like) flushed by accident and hung up in one of the sharp air-lock bends. Once the toilet's off the floor it's easy to tell if that's the case: tip it on it's side (obvious caveats apply) and run a short snake up from the bottom, if it pops out into the bowl without encountering any obstruction the toilet internals are clean.

I'd say good luck and I hope it gets worked out, but I don't have a lot of faith in warranty companies.

When we moved in, our downstairs furnace was incorrectly installed in a dugout hole in our crawlspace. It was about 8 years old and water had to go uphill to drain. The first winter we were here, the heat exchanger died. The warranty company couldn't find anyone willing to do the work (no surprise, they were going to pay them about $100 to do the work - it was a two-day, two man job). They were willing to reimburse us $75 if we had the heat exchanger fixed. After two weeks of no heat, we opted to hire an actual professional to properly install a new gas pack furnace for the house.

I think they think they will or may have to break the toilet to get whatever it is out. But I'm not sure, because I'm now convinced that the guy who came out yesterday was either incompetent (whether as a plumber or just as a communicator) or feeding me a line; I'm really fairly annoyed now, and hoping they make it right, fast.

My past experiences -- broken AC and minor plumbing trouble -- were fine; I'm hoping they straighten this out soon, but I'm working on a contingency plan.

I've had good luck telling our warranty company that I felt that "x person who you sent out to do the service did not seem to know a whole lot about this and I feel really uncomfortable with them doing any more work, could you please send someone else out?"

In that particular case, we ended up getting a new washing machine when the first twit had wanted to try and fix it. The next company said "hell no, it's worthless to try and repair it because this will just happen again, time for a new one!" and the warranty company paid for a new one.

I have told them I wasn't pleased with that guy, and that if he's their "senior tech", as I was told by the person I spoke to today, then they're in trouble; she told me she'd register a complaint for me, but I don't know what that means for future work on my place.

Contingency plan is an excellent idea. We've had one good, two bad, and two really bad experiences with a warranty company. The warranty came with our house, but we have dropped it, because they seem to have very slippery criteria for what they will and won't cover.
