I am several chapters into the second book of the Gormenghast trilogy.
Please give me one or more reasons to keep slogging.
The prose may be lush, but so is an impassable jungle, and I find myself longing for a machete. Will diligence be rewarded in the end, or would I be hooked by now if it were my cup of tea?

You could always watch the bbc miniseries...

(Great pic of you, by the way...)

Thanks; [livejournal.com profile] foxgrrl took that at Baycon a year ago (or was it two years ago now?).

The BBC was live action, right? Based on the first book and what I've read of the second, I can't see any way to do this justice except as animation, or the sort of CG/live blend used in the LotR movies.

I think you'd be hooked by now.

That's about how far I got. Took me a year or so.

Hooked. Ferget it.

I read it when I was a hyper-emotional teenybop. And even then I had a bit of trouble after the first book.

I even tried the audiobook and I barely made it through the first few chapters.

Argh, the Gormenghast books. I think I made it through the first book as a special favor to Dave, who likes them. And then I put them away forever. Lush prose does not make up for characters I found incredibly unlikeable.

(I like your pic too! :) )

I think I had just enough sympathy for Fuschia to pull me through most of the first book, and enough stubbornness to finish it. I hoped taking a break between 1 and 2 would clear my palate enough, but I'm thinking this just isn't for me; time to give up.

I didn't get all the way through the first book, but it's still hanging around in audio form (as are the second and third) on my computer. I feel your pain.
