I need more of a particular sort of yarn.
And I need KB/mouse extension cables.
So I was contemplating when and where to acquire these and realized that the three stores where I buy yarn (Michael's, Beverly's, and Wal-mart) are all in shopping centers with Radio Shacks.

Coincidence? Rat Shack saturation? Evil marketing plot based on gender stereotypes? Some even more insidious conspiracy?

It must be conspiracy

Although I'm not entirely sure what yarn and cables have to do with each other, it must be conspiracy. Maybe Radio Shack is supposed to appeal to women because of the whole Teri Hatcher thing? (Although all she makes me want to do is stay far far away from the stores. And don't even get me started on the whole Pier One thing).

Well, I was thinking more along the lines of "The women can go buy craftsy stuff while the men go buy gadgets!" Evil stereotypes, see?

I think I'm glad I don't watch enough TV to have the faintest clue what Teri Hatcher thing you mean. :) Or what Pier One has to do with anything.

The Teri Hatcher thing has to do with Rat Shack's annoying commercials with her and some dumb football player.

The Pier One thing is yet more annoying commercials with um, Kirstie Alley I think.

Basically it's a sign I need to stop watching network television, even for the news, because it annoys me too much.

WE've got to get you better yarn! :)

Although, I've bought acrylic stuff at Michael's for baby sweaters. Lion Brand isn't that bad, although it tears my hands to shreds.

On the other hand, thanks to my obsession with natural fiber yarn, I have more expensive yarn that I know what to do with. But, find a yarn shop! They are cool! :)

(Meant good naturedly. Nothing wrong with acrylics. :))

My observation has been that knitting is a lot more sensitive to yarn quality than crochet is. Someone wants to buy the baby blanket I just made from Red Heart Baby Clouds (which is what I want to get more of). I love the Lion Brand Homespum, but it's kind of expensive. (I know there's worse, but still.)
I only know of one yarn shop around here, and they're really inconveniently located. I've got some good yarn a (now ex-)coworker gave me, but it's just one or two balls each of this and that, and mostly sportweight or fingering weight, except for the really thick stuff, and mostly ornages and browns and greens, so I'm not sure what to do most of it. Except the pastel mohair, which I'm saving for when someone in my (blood or chosen) family has a kidlet; there's about enough for a baby hat or maybe some booties.

That's probably the case. I have two afghans that my great grandmother crocheted years ago, and they both still look great. And, they are made with probably Red Heart Super Saver acrylic. :)

I've made a few baby blankets with acrylic that after washing are very nice. And Mela's baby sweater was made out of acrylic (lion brand homespun). But, for scarfs and stuff I wear, I pretty much go with wool or cotton or silk or whatever. But, that is expensive.

Well, considering I've gotten blackwork and kumihimo supplies at Wally World - and then walked over to Fry's for the techie stuff...... :-)

I try to avoid Radio "You've got questions, we've got blank stares" Shack though.

I think the world needs a techie and craft store. Unless one is planning to knit using Cat 5 cable......

Yeah, but I looked at Fry's a while back, and the shortest extension cables they had were 6 footers, which is too long for what I need -- 3 feet would probably be plenty. Rat Shack's not too bad if you know what you need, IME.

For me the really dangerous store is the Fry's in Palo Alto -- half a block away from Gryphon Stringed Instruments, the best guitar store in the Valley.

Rat Shack's OK if they have what you need; often they don't.
