People on the diabetes community were just talking about this. Russell Stover has a good line of "no sugar added" candies, but don't eat too many - they have a laxative effect!
The chocolate bars from Chuao will probably mail ok. They're maltitol-sweetened, though, so if he has a sensitivity to maltitol, go with some other option.
Alas, they currently only have three flavors, and Mom and I are confident he wouldn't like the coffee/anise, pretty sure he wouldn't like the Earl Grey (he isn't fond of the tea), and not sure how he'd feel about the Spicy Maya. Godiva won, this time.
I seem to remember some Russell Stover low-carb (probably sugar-free) candy in a green bag that was really good. There were definately peanut butter cups and maybe some toffee thingies.
The sugarfree livesavers are pretty darn good. They have splenda. My sugar addict husband was unable to recognize them as sugar free. The flavor is good, although the green is watermelon which I don't really like.
For a birthday present, specialty is great, as long as I can either order online and have it shipped or buy it in San Diego and mail it. I'll keep the Russell Stover in mind, but I was hoping for something a little less common. (I'll probably be getting at least one of the Chuao bars caprine mentioned, for instance, because that's a local chocolatier who I know makes very good chocolates.)
I don't know how helpful this will be, since you asked for candy, but Voortman's just put out a whole line of sugar free cookies that are delicious! I can't have sugar and I am allergic to sucralose, so there's not much out there for me. But the Voortman's cookies (Zeer-oh's, Sugar Wafers, etc.) are really good. I found them at KMart and at the grocery store.
By the way, thank you so much for all of your very intelligent, and correct, posts to the inquiry I made over on crochet, which erupted into a name-calling fest by Lord Voldemort of the Crochet community. Your replies were balanced, calm, truthful, and filled with a grace obviously missing from she-who-must-not-be-named! (LOL!) I deleted them all because her posting made me ill and I didn't want the public spectacle to continue. She obviously feeds on the self-agrandizement.
hanks! His birthday was Wednesday, but I'll keep your recommendation in mind for Father's Day and other upcoming holidays. He's pretty hard to shop for, so it's good to have ideas.
Good luck with the scarf -- it's a lovely pattern. (And I didn't see any obvious errors in it, so I don't know where you might be going awry.)

Date: 2005-05-06 10:11 pm (UTC)The Nestley stuff is pretty good too.
I've had better specialty sugar free candies, but Russel Stover & Nestley both are easy to find and taste good (enough).
